The 2012 Golden Globes-Best & Worst Dressed

Last night at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards,  there were some amazing dresses on display.  Of all of the gowns, my pick for best dressed of the night, was definitely Emma Stone.  She was a standout in her stunning Lanvin dress with the vintage stone embellished belt and plunging neckline.  The combination of fuchsia and plum tulle with the thigh high slit made her look like a true celebrity and style icon.

Mila Kunis was gorgeous last night in this black Dior stunner.  Her elegantly pulled back hair and the Cartier accessories were the ideal complement to the gown.

Kristen Wiig is hilarious and one of my favourite comedic actresses.  Last night she pulled off one of the most elegantly dressed at the show.  Her Bill Blass gown with Fred Leighton gold accessories was simple but also so flattering.

The fishtail bottom gown, seemed to be all over the red carpet last night.  Sofia Vergara looked beautiful in her navy Vera Wang version.

Sunny yellow is a big trend for Spring 2012.  Paula Patton was so “0f-the moment,” in her gown.  She looked refreshing and beautiful in her dress.

Charlize Theron wins for the most dramatic dress of the evening.  This Dior Couture gown with the plunging neckline, thigh high slit, flowing train and over-sized bow was the essence of Hollywood glamour.

Stylist wanted: Amongst the misses last night, three stood out as the worst.  Sarah Michelle Gellar allowed her 2 year old daughter to choose her Monique L’huillier tie-dye disaster and it was obvious.  Sometimes it’s okay to say “no” to your kids.  Nicole Kidman wore a clingy dress with gold studded detail that came off as tacky, and Meryl Streep missed the mark in this cowboy inspired shirt dress.

Who Wore It Best

Alexa Chung, Ivanka Trump and Kirsten Dunst all rocked the same Rebecca Taylor frock but Kirsten Dunst works it the best with her casual black blazer, ankle boots and over-sized Louis Vuitton Duffle bag.  This is casual chic at its best.  The dress looks too pretty on Ivanka and doesn’t suit her body type.  Alexa Chung looks great in her dress paired with Miu Miu sparkle and suede booties.

While Alexa Chung looks great in this black lace-sleeved velvet Emilio Pucci dress, the shoes overwhelm the outfit and make it look a bit too severe.  Jessica Chastain has it right with her platform pumps, simple diamond drop earrings and her hair pulled back.

We adore this McQ tartan Puffball dress.  Both celebs look youthful and funky.  Chloe Moretz paired hers with ankle boots and socks for a school girl appeal and Emma Watson edged it up with pointy toe heels and a rocker leather jacket.

Designer Spotlight- Carven

Recently a client of mine took a trip overseas to Paris and came back with rave reviews of some of the fashion lines she spotted as hot and current. Designers such as Maje, Sandro, and super cool line Carven topped her list. I decided to take a closer look at Carven, and now see exactly why the Parisians are so enthralled with its fall/winter collection.

Since 1945 Carven has created simple and refined designs for the modern luxurious woman. Their fashion stance is to offer a line that is free from ostentation and instead focuses on the shape and angles of the items offered.

Available at Bergdorf Goodman in the States and TNT in Toronto, Carven is a design house to look out for as it proving to be on the forefront of ready to wear fashion.

The Blazer

The blazer is an effortless way to update your wardrobe instantly and look effortlessly chic.  Pair a cropped version like this black fitted jacket from H&M with a full short skirt and a top, or with a pair of trouser jeans and platform boots.  Throw on this orange topper from Zara and brighten up your look.  The printed snakeskin jacket from Zara is very en courant and looks great with these cropped pants and a blouse.  It’s a fresh take on the menswear inspired look.  Tweed blazers are great and can be added to a pair of skinny jeans, wide legged trousers or a skirt to add a lift to your wardrobe.  This one from shopstyle.com is no exception.  Pair it with a plain white or black tee or tank or try a logo’d version for some added edge.  This two tone jacket looks ideal with these faux leather leggings, grey top and boots.  It’s all about the blazer this season and pretty much anything goes.  It’s a must-have essential in any closet.

We’re Loving Topshop

Editor's Pick

The much anticipated arrival of Topshop at Yorkdale in Toronto is finally here.   We have coveted the line for years and couldn’t wait to see what fab finds we could get our hands on.

Here are our top picks in store right now that are also a steal in our humble opinion;

The tuxedo cropped jacket is a wardrobe staple this season and a timeless piece.  You can’t go wrong with this version from Topshop.  This black collarless classic is only $106 and will add a flair for the dramatic to any white t-shirt and skinny jeans combo.

The chanel-esque grosgrain ruffle boucle jacket is a great addition to any closet.  Pair it with a white tee or tank, wide or skinny jeans and you will look effortlessly chic.  If you want to toughen up the look then add a rocker tee or motorcycle boots to channel your inner rebel.

The kimono was our favourite add on from last season.  Winter Kate does it well but at a pricey cost of almost $300.  This metallic lined kimono is only $106 and looks great with skinny jeans or worn over top of a simple red, grey or black dress.

The pencil skirt is a wardrobe must-have and this one is a no brainer at $56. Pair it with a sheer blouse or chunky sweater for a casual day look or tuck in a shirt and throw on heels for a night on the town.

This 3/4 sleeve skater style dress is reminiscent of the fab designer Victoria Beckham’s from last season at  fraction of the cost.  It’s $88 and would look casual chic with a pair of chunky ankle or motorcycle boots and socks.  Or dress it up for night with great tights and a pair of rockin platform heels.

This fur collar boyfriend coat is so “on trend” right now and for $180 you can rock the mad men inspired look without breaking the budget.

This knitted navy loose fitted sweater is very Alexander Wang and it costs $72.  It looks great paired with a mini-skirt ankle boots and slouchy socks or over a pair of skinny jeans and motorcycle boots.  It also comes in hot pink if you want to embrace a vibrant colour into your fall wardrobe.

If you don’t own a pair of motorcycle boots, run don’t walk and grab these stylish yet so affordable pair.  At $66 it is our Editor’s Choice for best find at Topshop right now.

  Zara Poncho-$139.00

Obsession of the Week- Tuxedo Jackets

This fall, Hush is obsessed with the Tuxedo Blazer.  It comes in all shapes and sizes.  Buy a cropped version in black, white or cream, or a boyfriend tuxedo jacket over a rocker tee and jeans.  This tuxedo jacket is by Jason Wu and it’s our favourite this fall.  I love the unexpected light colour with the black trim.   The cropped and fitted shape makes it a perfect jacket for day or night.  Pair it with skinny ankle length pants like these from Burberry.  Add some feminine flair with this corset from Stella McCartney.  The gold bib necklace by Roberto Cavalli is very of-the-moment, and would look great with the jacket and corset.  Add a pop of colour with this stunning Alexander McQueen jade hard clutch with the gold skull clasp.

Layering with Alexander Wang

If you love fashion the way we do at Hush you will be no
stranger to the genius known as Alexander Wang.
Over the past few years this designer has come to revolutionize the way
we view jersey and cotton t shirting and has created an art form in its
usage.

This season, Wang has shown us that one of the best ways to
wear his pieces is to layer them – this is no easy task as the pieces you
choose to mix and match have to complement each other and your body
perfectly.  We love the look of wearing a
long dress with a loose long sleeve strategically worn over it, or a silk short
sleeve shift dress with a cotton long sleeve t shirt underneath it.  This is Alexander Wang styling at it’s very
best!

The best part of Wang’s items is the seasonal versatility it
provides.  By layering the pieces, you
can turn a long summer maxi into a perfect winter dress all by adding an item
or two.

With rumours flying within the fashion world that Wang is a
contender to take over John Galliano’s head designer position at the house of
Dior, we hope that Alexander Wang will stay true to his calling and continue to
show us new ways of viewing style basics by turning them into chic couture.

For the love of leather

Leather jackets have always been a year round fashion staple, however this season we are seeing leather worn in a new, edgy and fresh way..as pants, skirts and dresses!

The great thing about this resurgence is the cost and accessibility of these items. Whether it is from the Gap, The Row, or any other designer there truly is something for everyone in terms of budget or style. In addition, there are some phenomenal faux leather items that mimic the real versions.

One thing to remember when sporting a leather item is to keep the gloss to a minimum, meaning don’t overdose on the leather-wear one piece per outfit at a time.

Check out the pieces Hush has found in the most incredible leather looks.

Gap Leather Sheath Dress-$348.00

Danier Leather Leggings- $129.00

BCBG Faux Leather Pleated Skirt- $248.00

Urban Outfitters Leather Shorts-$139.00

The Row Leather Jacket-$2375.00

Top 10 Shoe Trends

There’s something for everyone when it comes to shoes this fall and winter.  Bright hues are no longer Au Currant, instead make room for neutrals like black, stone, beige, chocolate, khaki and dark blue.  Also metallics are huge this season.  Burgundy and red are also very on trend.  Pull out your pointed toe shoes from the past.  They are back in style.  Don’t despair though, because round toe is still popular.  Here are the top 10 trends were seeing this fall and winter for shoes.

1. Reptile Skins

Reptile leather is very trendy for fall and winter.  The Louis Vuitton boots are stunning and go with any dress or skirt.  This reptile skin Prada boot is a standout as well.

2.  Patent Leather

Patent leather looks stunning and sexy for day or night.  This pair by Marc Jacobs would work well with the new midi length skirt or dress.

3. Suede

Michael Kors makes this pair of suede over the knee boots.  They work with skinny jeans, a skirt or a dress.  I love the slate grey colour.

4. Buckles

Shoes or boots with a multitude of buckles are hot this season.  This pair by Emilio Pucci are sexy and also incorporate the spiked heel trend as well.

5. Spiked Heels

This pair of Brian Atwood pumps also incorporate the animal skin trend.  Stilettos are sexy for night or day and elongate the legs.

6. Platforms and Wedges

The wedge and platform shoe/boot trend, continues into fall and winter.  This season it’s a more modest and elegant look. This pair is by Michael Kors.

7. Lacing

Balmain makes this pair of lace up ankle boots.  This trend used to be delicate and feminine but has now transformed into a sexier version.

8. Chunky Heels

These come in all kinds of versions from classic pumps, to an oxford shoe to a rocker boot.

9. Satin Shoes

These are not for everyday.  Save this trend for a special occasion.

10. Socks in Shoes

This is my favourite of all the shoe trends.  If this is a little too daring for you, try wearing tights with  your shoes.
